Oblique or Not so Bleak?

I ended up going to bed late last night, due to the fact that I woke up at Noon on Sunday. Before I go to bed, I do my usual nerdy things, check myspace , facebook and Google reader. Generally speaking at 12:30am there is nothing exciting to report. Until I saw it…… the headline “Becket has Oblique Injury”. I gasped. I was temped to wake my sleeping husband, who would have cursed me for doing so. I felt something in the pit of my stomach. I think it was the Red Sox post season hoping going down the tubes!

However I woke up this morning to more news. Beckett will pitch in Game 3. It made me feeling slightly better, but what does this really mean? Is this like Lowell’s oblique injury? He was out for 2 or 3 weeks! The playoffs will be over by then!! I continued reading this morning, article after article and listening to talk radio, some saying things will be a-ok. Others (like WRKO) saying the Angels have already discounted the Red Sox, and are preparing for the ALCS. I also learned that if by game 3 Joshy isn’t up to pitching Francona can make an in-series switch, pitcher for pitcher but that Beckett would be out for the entire ALDS and ALCS.
Let’s hope Red Sox Nation (I’m still not sure how I feel about this term) can look on the bright side of things for a while… Remember, the Yankees are HOME!

Chili's

I'm not a huge fan of Chili's , but what they are doing is fantastic. So I wanted to spread the news. If you eat at Chili's SEPT 29th, and 100% of proceeds will be donated to St Jude's to fund research for pediatric cancer!

I will definitely be eating there Monday!!

Take a look at this if you need another reason to go..

Childhood Cancer Awareness Day

Today is Childhood Cancer Awareness Day....

Did you know?

*Each school day, 46 children are diagnosed with cancer.

*On the average 12,500 children and teens will be diagnosed with some form of cancer each year in this country.

*One in 330 children will develop cancer by age 20.

*Although the 5 year survival rate is steadily increasing, one quarter of children will die 5 years from the time of diagnosis.

*Cancer remains the #1 disease killer of America's children - more than Cystic Fibrosis, Muscular Dystrophy, Asthma and AIDS combined.

*In the U.S. almost 3,000 children do not survive cancer each year.

*Over the past two decades, only ONE new cancer drug has been approved for pediatric use.

*Currently there are between 30-40,000 children undergoing cancer treatment in the U.S.

*As a nation, we spend over $14 BILLION per year on the space program, but only $35 MILLION on Childhood Cancer Research each year.

*There are 15 children diagnosed with cancer for every one child diagnosed with pediatric AIDS. Yet, the U.S. invests approximiately $595,000 for research per victim of pediatric AIDS and only $20,000 for each victim of childhood cancer.

*Research funds are scarce as most money is diverted to well-publicized adult forms of cancer, such as breast and prostate.

*Right now, this second, somewhere in America, there are 7 children fighting for their lives who won't live through the day.

Please visit Life With My Special Ks to read more about childhood cancer and what you can do to help

Husband and Wife

The Wedding was amazing, everything went very smoothly. Matt and Christina looked, well see for your self.. This picture was taken at Roger William's Park in the Temple to Music. There was another wedding there , but we had a permit and was able use the locale how we wanted and they had to move as a result . The photographer was teasing me the whole time because I was taking just as many pictures as he did. Mostly Candids of the bride and groom though as I was a bridesmaid. Once we left Roger Williams Park we headed to the Ivy Garden in West Warwick. I must admit I was skeptical as to what I was going to see there . It was soo pretty! I would say that everyone really enjoyed themselves , some more than they should have!the bride and groom danced the night away before heading back to their hotel to get next to no sleep . They headed on their honeymoon this morning at 6am. By now Matt and Christina should have already arrived to their all inclusive resort in Cancun , hopefully Gustav and Hannah will stay far away.
Congratulations to the new Mr and Mrs!!

Wedding.. Wedding and More Wedding

Matthew and Christina are getting married tomorrow. This I am excited about . I will now have someone that I can consider a sister!! We had the rehersal last night , the pastor/ minister( not sure) is a funny guy , it should be a great ceremony!!

One thing that I am finding to be slightly difficult is to stop comparing my wedding to theirs. I know not everyone shares the same tastes but I still find myself thinking what I would have done differently. Regardless , its going to be an amazing event!!!

The details so far .....

The Bride and Groom will have their first dance to Everything by Michael Buble
the bridal party is dancing to Can you feel the love tonight by Elton John
Matthew and My Mom are dancing to What a Wonderful World by Louis Armstrong ( This is the same song John and his mother danced to at our wedding!)
The bridal party is being introduced to Celebration by Kool and the Gang... this makes me nervous , as I feel I should have some clever way of entering the room , but i'm just not that clever!

From what I understand each table's centerpiece will be our very own cake with the table number on it . I love this idea for multiple reasons . 10 people to a table and a single layer of cake is ALOT of cake!! yummm. secondly Christina has Celiac's so a gluten free cake is necessary for her. But I do not share in this and even though some gluten free stuff is great. I love gluten in my cake!

I'm very excited to see the flowers I will get to carry. I am crossing my fingers we have great weather , as we're taking pictures after the ceremony at Roger William's Park, Temple to Music and the Rose Garden....
How much more Rhode Island can you get!!!!
I love it!!

I hope everyone has an awesome Labor Day Weekend!!! Pictures and more details to follow!!!

the greatest appetizer in history!

I found this on theday.com ( by Elissa Bass) but I needed to share it , its the greatest appetizer in history!, ok , maybe its just my favorite anywho......

This is good, because the Garlic Bread with Maytag Bleu Cheese Fondue at Michael Jordan's Steakhouse at Mohegan Sun is the greatest appetizer in the history of food.If you have had it, you know this to be true. If you have not, you can either drive up to the casino in Uncasville and shell out $7.95 for an order, or you can cut out this recipe and make it yourself. Michael Jordan is the greatest basketball player in the history of the sport.

David Maini is the new executive chef at Michael Jordan's, and on June 1 he unveiled an updated menu that offers new dishes, organic produce, and more seafood and pasta options. He was wise enough to know, however, not to touch the garlic bread appetizer. It is one of the restaurant's most popular items.

FOR THE GARLIC BUTTER:

1 pound butter, softened
2 tablespoons chopped shallots
3/4 cup chopped garlic
1/4 cup fresh lemon juice
2 tablespoons chopped flat leaf parsley
Salt and fresh ground pepper to taste

FOR THE FONDUE:

16 ounces crumbled Maytag bleu cheese
1 quart heavy cream
1/4 chopped white onion
1/3 cup white wine
1 tablespoon unsalted butter
Salt and fresh ground pepper to taste

FOR PRESENTATION:

1 loaf ciabbatta
Chopped fresh chives for garnish

To make the garlic butter: Combine all the ingredients in a food processor or Kitchen Aid mixer with paddle attachment and mix until thoroughly combined.
To make the fondue: Saute the onion on the butter over medium heat until translucent, then deglaze with the white wine and reduce. Add the cream, bring to a boil and then reduce to a simmer. Add the cheese and reduce until the fondue's texture is thick and creamy and can coat the back of a spoon. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Serve immediately.
For presentation: Cut the bread into four rectangles and then cut those pieces in half. With a spatula, spread a layer of garlic butter onto the top of each piece and place in a preheated 450-degree oven until golden brown (8-10 minutes). Remove and let cool slightly before cutting each piece into four more pieces.
Pool the warm fondue on the bottom of a serving plate and then stack the garlic bread pieces, Lincoln Log-style in the middle of the pool. Garnish with the chopped chives and serve immediately.

Its Bay Day!!

So , I haven't said anything about the Manny trade yet, not that people are reading this for my opinion on the matter , but I still have one. Its a shame to see Manny go the way he did. When he was on his game , he was really on. He was super fun to watch, made great plays ,and hit a ton. But then there was the flipside Manny was demanding, he didnt appear to be a team player . He saw dollar signs instead of runs, and he was crappy to management... There may be more to the story , but this is what I've seen. So to Manny, Good Luck in the future! and Welcome to Jason Bay!!! 12th inning triple, and Jed Lowrie hit him in! What an ending!!

... I havent uploaded the Disneyland pics yet... soon , maybe tomorrow!

Stupid - A Rant

I just feel the need to say this.... Regardless of the fact that I am a Die-hard Red Sox fan..... I absolutely DESPISE Yankees Fans. Basically , they suck, they have little to no class.. Chanting over-rated in an All-Star Game? Twisting a players interview to what they'd like to hear. ugh!

If you're not sure what I'm talking about , and I'm sure those who are reading this are....

Read this or this

ugh.... now , with that being said I know there are just as many classless Red Sox fan . This girl however is not one of them. I am not the cocky girl who thinks the red sox are the bees knees. I remember when they sucked the big one. Argh. Just annoying I guess... those damn Yankee fans.......

2. Go to Vegas ( yes i know this is another state)
3. Put my feet in the Pacific Ocean ( ive never done this before)
4. Go to Laguna Beach. (Just because)

All Star Game.

Fantastic. 7 Players will represent the red sox in the all star game. Dustin Pedroia and Kevin Youklis, Manny and Ortiz were all voted to start by the fans. Sweet! Of course Big Papi will not be playing. Veritek was voted in by the players ( say what?! ) and then there is J.D Drew and Papelbon. The Red Sox tie the Cubs with the number of players voted in. How Mike Lowell is not on this list confuses me. He is performing much better , and more consistency than Veritek. Terry Francona will be Managing the AL team as he was the winning manager from 2007. Interesting I didn't realize that that's how it was determined.

Overall should be a fun game. Wish I had tickets....

Just Remember What It's All About...

Photobucket

So, most of the country has the 4th of July off . This includes me , and my husband . John is a Submariner in the United States Navy. He has served this country for 7 years to date. currently he is not attached to a boat, however he is teaching those who are.

My husband and I have been a couple for 7 4th of July's . He has been home for 3 of those. I know there are many other military families who experience the same thing( along with Christmases, Thanksgivings, birthdays etc) . And before you say you knew what you were getting into" blah blah blah. This I know. But today I would just like you to remember as you have that beer at the family cookout , or take a bite of that hot dog . This day exists for a reason . It is not the unofficial start of summer . It is the day we celebrate our independence. Thank a Veteran. Do something nice for someone you know who serves, and lastly remember those who have lost their lives defending your freedom. I get all teary just typing it.

So please , have a very Happy 4th of July , spend it with those you love , spend it safely , and spend it remembering those who can't be with the ones they love..

GI Bill What?

I made a cake yesterday.. It was a Vanilla Cinnamon Cake .. It was suppose to have a Mexican Hot Chocolate frosting , but I don't have any ancho chilies, so instead I made a vanilla butter cream frosting . Needless to say it was super dry . the frosting was good though. Man was I disappointed. It was the first time in a while that I failed in the kitchen

So, I was reading the Navy Times and there was an article about spouses being able to use the GI bill. If I can go to Culinary School on the Navy's dime I am ALL for it. As each day goes by the more I think about it . Even though things at work are getting better, I know its not what I want to do. I want to be a chef darn it!

So the family got some more news over the weekend. My cousin Brian and his wife Jessica are expecting their first child in Feb. Same month as Matt and Christina. So that would make 4 babies in the family under 1. and 6 under 4!!! Our Family has grown in leaps and bounds over the last 3 years. Its very exciting!!

CPL Holly Charette 9/27/83-6/23/05

3 years ago today the world lost the brightest star I have ever known. She was just Holly. Crazy smiles, always…. Last week I was looking through my photo albums from senior year, literally every picture I have of Holly has her sticking her tongue out. There is not a day that goes by.. (I know that sounds so cliché) that I don’t think about Holly Charette.

You can read about her here or here and leave her a message here.

I don’t really know what to say, but June 23rd 2005 changed my life. There are so many things I should have done differently but I didn’t so now I can only remember the good times we had together. Thankfully there were many.

Holly Charette I will never forget you…

Yesterday was a long day....

I wrote this yesterday...

So, I’m writing this at work, because our system is
down and literally I have NOTHING to do, no internet to surf, nothing.
I spoke with my cousin today; she said she was relived to hear that it
was not me who was pregnant. What exactly does that mean?
Does she think I’m too young? I’m 25.
Surely she meant nothing by it, but why would you say that
to someone? How does she know I’m not trying to get
pregnant, and nothing is coming of it. How would she feel then?
I think pregnancy is a very touchy subject with a lot of people.
I can not tell you how many people as of late have a
sked me when I am going to have a child.
Isn’t that personal? Why would you ask someone?
I think pregnancy is one of those topics that
should be off limit in general conversation.
Unless the woman in question brings it up.

I can’t really explain how excited I am that my brother and
Christina are going to have a baby. I am so so so so happy for
them. I can’t wait to be Auntie Allison, and take my niece or
nephew to all the places I loved to go as a child. I also
love that I can sugar up said child and hand them right
back over to Mommy and Daddy. I can’t wait to spoil
this kid like I spoil Abby. I haven’t been this excited about
something in a long time... I might even be more excited
about new baby than I am to go to Disney!!! And
that’s huge for those who know me... I’m a Disney freak!

Class of 2001 Where are you now?

we were almost never apart....
Jon, Allison Ricky

On the eve of the 7th anniversary of the class of 2001 from Cranston High School East, I can't help but wonder where my classmates are . Are they happy? Have they gotten everything they hoped for senior year? Gosh , I remember it like it was yesterday.... Prom with Ray... Graduation night with Ray and Danielle... and then the infamous "puddle" aka flooded road incident, that would be the time where I flooded the engine of they car i just got permission to drive.. good times...

But really... where is everyone? are they still in cranston? it seems lots of people are getting married... having kids... Did everyone graduate from college like they had intended? Who is in the Military? Sadly some of our classmates have passed away , at ages where you should be expirences your "firsts" not your "lasts".. On a brighter note I found some pictures from senior year. some times, I won't ever forget....

Fists Fly at Fenway Park

Coco Crisp expected there might be some payback after Wednesday night's controversial slides into second base. So, when Tampa Bay starter James Shields hit Crisp with a pitch in the second inning, it first appeared Crisp might just go to first base. Instead, Crisp dropped his bat, flipped his helmet and charged the mound. He dodged Shields's punch and then hit Shields before being taken down by catcher Dioner Navarro. Tampa DH Jonny Gomes got in a few shots on Crisp as both dugouts emptied and jumped into the fray. When it was sorted out, Crisp and Shields were ejected. Righthander Grant Balfour took over on the mound for Tampa Bay.

and then in the top of the 4th.... Ellsbury is hurt... dang . what a game!
and then manny goes after youk??

British Nuke Sub Watchmen Caught Drinking, Napping Before Red Sea Crash

Tuesday, June 03, 2008

A watchman was caught drinking beer and falling asleep on a nuclear submarine which crashed in the Red Sea last week, Sky News reported Tuesday.

The crewman has been placed on leave from the HMS Superb while a Ministry of Defense investigation is carried out.

His conduct came to light after cellphone footage obtained by The Sun newspaper showed a commander warning crew about safety breaches that he said were "unacceptable" and irresponsible.

The officer is identified by the paper as Executive Officer Lieutenant Commander John Aitken.

He says on the video clip: "You know far better than to allow stuff like that to happen. As submariners, you accept responsibility for yourselves and your shipmates."

The HMS Superb crashed into rocks in the Red Sea on May 26, damaging its sonar equipment and forcing it to surface.

Allison and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day

I will first start out by saying . Sara you were right. I work in a toxic place , where I am constantly put down , even though I'm the most experienced person there. Please when was the last time i asked a question about how to do my job. But thats neither here nor there. I really don't so much hate my job, I really do like it , but i DESPISE my " leaders" aka bosses. I need a change. NOW is the time. I was thisclose to walking out today after I was told my hair is unprofessional. argh.

So ... in other news... wait I have no other news. I'm just in a really bad mood , and I don't know how to get out of it other than calling the boss lady and telling her i'm not coming in tomorrow . but then thats not professional either , and I don't really want to throw the last 4 years down the tubes.

I'm really just hoping tomorrow is a better day . I guess thats all you can really do right?

Oh, and I'd like to know how something like this happens ...

Florida Teacher Allegedly Lets Kindergarteners Kick Autistic Boy Out of Class in 'Survivor'-Like Vote

Wednesday, May 28, 2008

Hundreds of parents of autistic children are signing an online petition to get Florida teacher Wendy Portillo fired for her alleged tactics toward a 5-year-old boy that mirror the reality show “Survivor.”

Morningside Elementary School in Port St. Lucie, Fla., alerted Melissa Barton this year that her son, Alex, suffers from a high-functioning form of autism called Asperger's Syndrome, FOX 29 reported.

Barton claims that Alex was punished for symptoms of his disability, such as humming and eating his homework. She says Portillo went too far last week when she kicked Alex out of class, and then allowed the other students to vote on whether he should be allowed back in.

Each student was also allowed to say what he or she did not like about Alex. By a 14-to-2 margin, the students voted Alex out of class, according to The South Florida Sun-Sentinel.

“She said this was her way of correcting his behavior,” Barton said. “I asked him how that made him feel and he said, ‘I feel sad.’”

Barton has filed a complaint with Morningside's school resource officer, who investigated the matter, Port St. Lucie Police Department spokeswoman Michelle Steele told the Sun-Sentinel.

But the state attorney's office decided the matter did not meet criteria for emotional child abuse, so no criminal charges will be filed, Steele said.

The teacher has been disciplined, however.

“Ms. Portillo has been reassigned outside of the classroom at the district offices until any further action may be determined," St. Lucie County School District said in a statement.

Alex has not returned to school since the incident, and Barton says he won’t be going back.

"He was incredibly upset," Barton told the Sun-Sentinel. "The only friend he has ever made in his life was forced to do this."

First Blog!!

Ok , so not that anyone pressured me to get one of these fancy blogger blogs, but darn it I felt left out. If you're reading this , is it safe to assume you know me? possibly. I feel an introduction is required. I am Allison , married to John , we reside in Connecticut aka the state with the second highest gas prices. We have 2 dogs , Sox and Fenway , clearly we are Red Sox fans. No human children. I've been married now for almost 4 years. I've been with John for almost 7 years ( holy crap). We've probably only spend about 3 years consecutively together . This is due to the fact that he is in the Navy. He has ( with my help) decided to make a career out of it. I one billion percent support that. We have purchased a condo in which we have currently stalled with the cosmetic enhancements. We decided to use our money to vacation instead. I might love Disney more thank you're average 25 year old , but whatever. We're going twice this year!

Recently my eyes have been opened to the world of pediatric cancer. Fortunately no one in my family has been directly impacted by this , it could have easily happened to anyone I know. I will do anything I can to support that cause as no parent should have to bury a child. I will be walking in the Relay for Life in Honor of Cody Myers. He earned his angel wings June 13, 2007 at the age of 2. You can visit www.carepages.com. Cody's page is CodyMyers1.

Well , I think I've said enough. I hope to keep up with this more than I have with other blogs.
